University International Rankings

Higher education is one of the main components of all societies around the world and universities play an important role as leaders in teaching and learning (education), professional training, research, technology and innovation in relevant arena. Surely, everyone is aware of the importance of international rankings for higher educational institutions in diversifying their student admissions, financial turnover, recruitment and expansion of inter-institutional research/educational collaborations among faculty.

Nowadays, investment in universities has become one of the main priorities for governments in under-developed, developing and developed nations. This is important not just for educating the student body, but also for their many benefits and crucial roles in society. They transform people’s lives, develop the skills and knowledge to solve the society’s problems, create businesses to enrich society, improve competition power in the global market, drive innovation and economic growth.

Considering universities’ important roles, and the fact that a major portion of university income today comes from international collaborations, they need to transform themselves by becoming more efficient and influential both locally, regionally and internationally in our very rapidly changing world, which is essential to benefit from globalization. As globalization has resulted in rapid changes within all aspects of education, research, and clinical practice, international competition and scientific collaborations have become a priority on most university’s agenda. In such an atmosphere, university ranking has become significantly important among universities and in academia. Universities need to be aware of where they stand among their peers on a national and international scale, so that they can properly evaluate their performance and develop a strategic plan to strengthen their progress and overcome their shortcomings, which are necessary for achieving their goals.

Nowadays, international ranking has become a vital need for universities, several ranking systems have been proposed over the past two decades by different countries, most importantly; Times Higher Education (THE-United Kingdom), Shanghai ARWU (China), CWUR Leiden (The Netherlands), Webometrics (Spain), Green Metrics, QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) and Scimago, all of which assess universities worldwide based on various criteria (mainly teaching, research and international collaborations). In these ranking systems, the bibliometric data obtained from open-access and credible information resources such as Elsevier’s Scopus, ISI (Information Sciences Institute) and Google Scholar contributes to the objectivity of these ranking systems.

RADA International has provided trusted support by its cadre of international and experienced professionals who have directly been involved in international ranking processes worldwide. We have offered consultation and advice to university officials and higher educational institutions from various backgrounds (both medical and non-medical universities), and managed the implementation of their entire ranking process, which have resulted in significant improvement in their rankings. Perhaps, the best example to support our claim is the experience of one such university; where we were able to secure the “Number 1 rank nationally and in the Middle Eastern Region and be among the top 100 in the World” according to Times Impact Rankings for five consecutive years. More recently, based on the Times Impact Rankings in 2023, one university ranked first in Goal #3, “Good Health and Well-being” among more than 1,100 universities from 98 countries worldwide. In addition, two universities which had received our consultation for the Times World University Rankings in 2022, secured their position as top 400 and 600 in the world university rankings, where they also ranked among the top 400 according to the Times Subject Rankings in 2022. More interestingly, one of them had entered and ranked for the first time by Times Higher Education, where it also ranked among the top 3 universities nationally out of 60 universities that had participated in this ranking process.
